Water Depth

Shallow Water - Depth: Up to 1,000 feet (305 meters) - Common rigs: Jack-up rigs, fixed platforms - Used for: Nearshore drilling, continental shelf operations

Midwater - Depth: 1,000 to 5,000 feet (305 to 1,524 meters) - Common rigs: Semi-submersibles, some advanced jack-ups - Used for: Deeper offshore fields, transitioning from shallow to deepwater

Deepwater - Depth: 5,000 to 7,500 feet (1,524 to 2,286 meters) - Common rigs: Semi-submersibles, drillships - Used for: Exploration and production in deeper offshore basins

Ultra-Deepwater - Depth: Beyond 7,500 feet (2,286 meters) - Common rigs: Drillships, advanced semi-submersibles - Used for: High-tech deep-sea drilling, complex reservoir exploration
