Viscometer
Drilling Fluids & Logging
A viscometer (typically a Fann 35 rotational viscometer) is a laboratory instrument used by the mud engineer to measure the rheological properties of the drilling fluid, such as Plastic Viscosity (PV) and Yield Point (YP).
By spinning a rotor sleeve at varied speeds (300 and 600 rpm), the engineer determines the fluid's flow characteristics. These parameters dictate how well the mud can lift cuttings (hole cleaning) and the pressure losses it will induce in the drillstring (ECD - Equivalent Circulating Density).
