Vacuum distillation

A process that distills the heavy residue from the atmospheric column under very low pressure (vacuum). Reducing the pressure lowers the boiling point.

This allows heavy hydrocarbons to be vaporized and separated without reaching temperatures high enough to cause thermal cracking (coking) in the heater.
