Tricone bit

A Tricone bit is a type of roller cone drill bit consisting of three rotating cones equipped with cutting elements—either steel teeth (Milled Tooth) or tungsten carbide inserts (TCI). As the bit rotates, the cones turn, crushing and gouging the rock formation. Tricone bits are highly versatile and effective in a wide range of geologies, from soft clays to ultra-hard granite.

The interaction between the cones and the rock is complex, involving both crushing and sliding actions. Bearing assemblies within the cones (either sealed journal bearings or open roller bearings) are critical for bit life. While PDCs have taken significant market share, Tricone bits remain essential for specific applications like drilling out cement plugs, large-diameter surface holes, or extremely hard abrasive rock where PDCs might suffer impact damage.
