Top drive
Drilling Equipment & Components
A top drive is a mechanical device suspended from the derrick's traveling block that rotates the drillstring directly from the top, rather than using a rotary table and kelly. It runs on a guide rail (torque track) to prevent the housing from rotating while the internal motor turns the pipe. Top drives allow for drilling with stands (triple joints of pipe), significantly reducing connection time and reducing the risk of stuck pipe by allowing rotation while hoisting.
Top drives have revolutionized drilling efficiency and safety. They provide better control over torque and speed and allow for the circulation of drilling fluid while tripping pipe in or out of the hole, which is crucial for well control and hole cleaning. Most modern land and offshore rigs are equipped with electric or hydraulic top drive systems.
