Surface safety valve

A Surface Safety Valve (SSV) is an automatic fail-safe closed valve fitted on the Christmas tree. It is hydraulically or pneumatically held open.

If control pressure is lost (due to an emergency ESD trip, fire, or high/low line pressure pilot trip), a spring forces the valve closed, shutting in the well.
