Subsurface safety valve

A Sub-Surface Safety Valve (SSSV or SCSSV) is installed deep in the production tubing (usually below the permafrost or seabed). It is the final barrier to prevent blowout if the wellhead is sheared off.

It is controlled hydraulically from the surface via a small control line. It is mandatory in offshore wells.
