Sand separator

A sand separator (sand trap) is a high-pressure vessel placed between the wellhead and the choke manifold during flowback. It uses centrifugal force or gravity to knock out abrasive frac sand from the high-rate gas/fluid stream.

Removing sand is critical to protect downstream equipment (chokes, valves, pipelines) from rapid erosion ('washout'). It is essentially a specialized cyclone designed for well testing conditions.
