Reamer
Drilling Equipment & Components
A reamer (or hole opener) is a tool used to enlarge the wellbore beyond the size of the original pilot bit. It can be run simultaneously with the bit (reaming while drilling) or as a dedicated trip to widen a section of the hole.
Roller reamers use cutters similar to roller cone bits to crush rock, providing a smoother borehole wall and reducing torque compared to fixed-blade stabilizers. They are particularly useful in hard formations or when 'doglegs' need to be wiped out to ensure casing can optionally be run.
