Pipeline coating

Pipeline coating is the first line of defense against external corrosion. Common coatings include Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE), 3-Layer Polyethylene (3LPE), and coal tar enamel.

The coating must insulate the steel from the soil electrolyte and resist mechanical damage during installation. 'Field joints' (where pipes are welded together) are coated manually on site and are often the most vulnerable points for failure.
