Pipe spinner

A pipe spinner is a pneumatic or hydraulic tool used to rapidly spin the drill pipe during the make-up or break-out process. It replaces the dangerous 'spinning chain' used manually by roughnecks in the past.

It applies low torque but high speed to screw the threads together until the shoulders land, at which point the iron roughneck or tongs apply the final torque.
