Pig launcher

A pig launcher is a pressurized vessel or barrel installed at the upstream end of a pipeline used to insert a pipeline inspection gauge ('pig') into the line without stopping the flow of product. It consists of a closure door, a barrel, and valve arrangements (kicker lines) to divert flow behind the pig to push it.

Launching a pig is a routing operation for cleaning (scraping wax/debris) or inspecting (MFL/Smart pigs) the pipeline interact. The launcher must be designed to handle full pipeline pressure and safely vent trapped pressure before opening the door.
