Mud logging

Mud logging is the continuous monitoring of a drilling rig's active fluid system and the microscopic examination of drilled cuttings to gather geological and safety data. It serves as the primary real-time formation evaluation method, detecting the presence of hydrocarbons (gas shows) and identifying lithology changes as the well is drilled depth by depth.

Mud loggers operate from a specialized unit on site, using sensors to track drilling parameters like Rate of Penetration (ROP), gas levels (Total Gas, Chromatography), and pit volumes (for kick detection). Their logs provide the first look at the formation and are crucial for correlation with seismic data and preventing drilling hazards.
