Mud gas separator

A Mud Gas Separator (MGS), often called a 'poor boy degasser,' is a large vertical vessel used during well control operations. Unlike standard degassers that handle small amounts of entrained gas, the MGS is designed to handle large volumes of free gas from a kick.

It separates the gas from the mud by gravity and centrifugal force. The gas is vented safely via a large vent line to the flare stack, while the degassed mud returns to the active system. It is the first line of defense against gas on surface.
