Mud cooler

A mud cooler is a heat exchanger (typically plate-and-frame) used to reduce the temperature of the drilling fluid returning from hot wells (HP/HT). Hot mud can damage elastomers in BOPs, LWD tools, and mud motors, and can pose a safety hazard to the crew.

By circulating the mud through the cooler (often using seawater or chilled water), the temperature is managed to extend the life of downhole tools and maintain stable mud rheology.
