This instrument measures the electrical conductivity (or resistivity) of the mud filtrate. It is crucial when drilling with water-based muds to track changes in salinity.
A sudden increase in chlorides (salinity) can indicate a saltwater flow from the formation (a kick). It is also used to calibrate resistivity logs.
