Mud agitator

A mud agitator is a mechanical mixer mounted on mud tanks. It features an impeller shaft that extends into the fluid, rotating constantly to keep solids suspended.

Without agitation, weighting agents like barite would settle to the bottom of the tank, creating 'dead spots' and reducing the density of the mud being pumped downhole. This could lead to a loss of well control if the mud weight becomes too light to control formation pressure.
