Mud additives

Mud additives are specialized chemicals and materials mixed into the drilling fluid to tailor its properties for specific well conditions. The drilling fluid system is complex, requiring precise control over density, viscosity, fluid loss, and chemical reactivity with the formation.

Common additives include Barite (to increase density for well control), Bentonite (to build viscosity and gel strength for hole cleaning), polymers (for filtration control and shale inhibition), and Lost Circulation Material (LCM) like sized carbonates or fibers to plug fractures and prevent fluid loss to the formation.
