Loss Control Material (LCM)

LCM, or Lost Circulation Material, refers to solid materials added to drilling fluid to address the issue of lost circulation during drilling operations. Lost circulation occurs when drilling fluid escapes into subsurface formations through fractures, porous zones, or other pathways, instead of returning to the surface.

Common types of LCM include fibrous materials (e.g., cedar fibers), granular materials (e.g., nutshells), and flake materials (e.g., mica). Each type is selected based on the severity and nature of the lost circulation issue. LCM material will not only plug up porus areas of the formation but will also plug or damage sensative parts of the BHA therefore it is advisable to have a LCM matrix to ensure that LCM use and size is kept to the minimum required.
