Gas chromatograph
Drilling Fluids & Logging
A gas chromatograph is an analytical instrument used by mud loggers to separate and analyze the chemical composition of gas extracted from the drilling mud. It identifies specific hydrocarbon components (C1-Methane through C5-Pentane).
The ratio of these gases (gas ratios) helps geologists identify the type of fluid in the reservoir (oil vs. gas vs. water) and detect oil-water contacts.
