Frac pump

A frac pump is a high-horsepower positive displacement pump designed to inject stimulation fluids into a well at immense pressures and rates. A typical frac unit (truck or skid) houses a large diesel engine or electric motor driving a quintuplex (five-cylinder) pump.

On a modern frac site, 15 to 20 of these pumps are manifolded together to deliver the total hydraulic horsepower (HHP) required—often exceeding 50,000 HHP—to break the rock and transport tons of sand downhole continuously for hours.
