Float shoe
Cementing & Well Integrity
A float shoe is a rounded, tapered component attached to the bottom of a casing string. It serves two main purposes: checking back-flow and guiding the casing. It contains a one-way check valve that prevents cement from flowing back into the casing from the annulus (u-tubing) after pumping stops.
Additionally, its rounded nose helps guide the casing past ledges and obstructions as it is run into the hole. The valve functionality also allows the casing to 'float' (if not filled completely) to reduce hook load, although this usage requires careful management of collapse pressure.
