ESP

An Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP) is a multi-stage centrifugal pump installed downhole to lift large volumes of fluid to the surface. It is powered by an electric motor connected to the surface via a heavy armored cable clamped to the tubing.

ESPs are the preferred artificial lift method for high-rate wells, particularly offshore or in high-volume water flood fields. They are efficient at moving fluid but are sensitive to gas and solids (sand), which can cause cavitation or erosion in the pump stages.
