Drill bit
Drilling Equipment & Components
A drill bit is the cutting tool attached to the end of the drillstring, responsible for crushing, shearing, or grinding the rock formation to deepen the wellbore. Its performance directly dictates the rate of penetration (ROP) and drilling efficiency, making bit selection one of the most critical engineering decisions in well planning.
Drill bits are broadly categorized into roller cone bits (using milled teeth or tungsten carbide inserts) and fixed cutter bits (primarily Polycrystalline Diamond Compact or PDC). PDC bits have become the industry standard for most applications due to their durability and shearing action, while roller cone bits are still favored in extremely hard or abrasive formations. Specialized hybrid bits also exist to combine the benefits of both designs.
