Drawworks

A drawworks is a critical component of a drilling rig's hoisting system, designed to handle the heavy lifting and lowering of equipment during drilling operations. It's essentially a large winch powered by electric or hydraulic motors.

The drawworks uses a spool or drum to wind and unwind the drilling line (a steel cable) connected to the traveling block, enabling the lifting and lowering of the drill string, casing, or other heavy equipment. It allows precise control over the speed and position of the load, ensuring smooth and safe operations during drilling, tripping (adding or removing drill pipe sections), and casing installation.

Drawworks are equipped with a braking mechanism (manual, electrical, or hydraulic brakes) to hold the load securely in place and prevent accidents or unwanted movement.

The drawworks should have a crownsaver and floorsaver installed which will automatically stop the movement of the drum to avoid the collision of the travelling block and top drive with either the crown block or the drillfloor.
