Derrick
Drilling Equipment & Components
A derrick is the large, load-bearing tower-like structure located over a drilling rig’s well center. Its primary function is to support the hoisting system used to raise and lower the drillstring and casing into the wellbore. Derricks are designed to withstand tremendous static and dynamic loads, including the weight of the pipe, wind loads, and the forces generated during drilling operations.
Derricks come in various configurations, including standard pyramid shapes and mast designs. Modern derricks are rated by their hook load capacity, which can range from a few hundred thousand pounds to over two million pounds for deepwater and ultra-deep wells. They also house the crown block and provide a vertical track for the traveling block and top drive system to operate.
