Centralizer bow spring

A bow spring centralizer is a device fitted to the outside of the casing to keep it centered in the borehole. Centering the pipe is crucial for a good cement job; if the pipe touches the wall (standoff = 0), cement cannot flow around that side, leaving a channel of drilling mud.

Bow springs are flexible, allowing them to compress through tight spots and expand in washed-out hole sections to provide restoring force. Rigid centralizers are used in deviated wells for better positive standoff.
