Cementing shoe track

The shoe track is the section of casing between the float shoe and the float collar, usually 1 to 3 joints (40-120 ft) long. Its purpose is to trap contaminated cement that settles on top of the top plug.

By stopping the displacement wiper plug at the float collar, any untrustworthy cement is left inside the shoe track rather than at the critical shoe area, ensuring a hard set cement around the shoe.
