A cement basket is a canvas or metal umbrella-like device run on the casing string, typically below a stage collar or weak formation. Its purpose is to support the hydrostatic weight of the cement column in the annulus while it sets, preventing it from falling back into lower zones.
It acts as a one-way bridge, allowing fluid to flow up but catching cement falling down. It does not provide a pressure seal but offers mechanical support.
