Barite
Drilling Fluids & Logging
Barite (Barium Sulfate) is a high-density mineral used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. By adding ground barite to the mud, engineers increase the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the fluid column, which is essential for counterbalancing formation pressure and preventing kicks (influx of formation fluids).
Barite is preferred because it is chemically inert, relatively inexpensive, and has a high specific gravity (4.2 SG). However, care must be taken to prevent 'barite sag,' where the heavy particles settle out of suspension in deviated wells, potentially causing density variations and stuck pipe issues.
